Since our Party for Change

I have been in a strange place.

Something happened last weekend which I've had trouble comprehending. I've been in this static autopilot since then: gone about my business, contacted the monks, contacted the foundation, let everyone know that it was a success. But still, I've been unable to calibrate. I've been scattered, and today I realized why that is.

I've been in shock.

I was overwhelmed last weekend. Absolutely leveled by what I saw, heard, and felt from the people around me. The generosity and caring that flowed forth from you was so intense, that I am only now, a week later, able to string words and thoughts together in such a way to reflect how I feel.

The two little words "thank you," barely scratch the surface.

What I saw happen last weekend was something I did not expect. I knew people would come out and party. I had no idea there would be an outpouring of support from so many of you I have never met. I expected to know most everyone, but as the night grew, I realized I was in a room full of foreign faces, all smiling, dancing and celebrating with open hearts.

Thank you for listening to our cause. Thank you for trusting a message you have never heard. Thank you for giving such a gift to people you have never met. Thank you for believing that we can make a difference through our happiness. Thank you for proving that we can change things with our music.

We hit our mark, and raised $2,500 for the rebuilding of the monk's dam. The potential life of this dam, once it is built will help not only the five thousand people that live there now, but their children also. A generation of Cambodians will be touched by this project.

This is because of you.

We're still working hard. If you're interested in helping to raise awareness and funds for the continuation of this endeavor, please visit www.HumanTranslation.org. We still have people to help, and this was not the last party for change.

To everyone who made this event possible, on behalf of the Monks and the Slor Kram Commune:
Orkoon, and Thank You.

Extra special thanks to the DJs, especially PORTER TINSLEY, who made it ALL happen using just her street-smarts, wit, and pure sexiness. Uber-special thanks to: Sundara Varna, Jesse Wright, Wolfie, Sammybliss, The Saynt, Ryan Hammill, Subir, Peter, Bianca, Barbie, Bruce, Rodney, Sehra, Silly, Candy, Shena, and Hyjynx for closing out the night. And of course Audra for her generous vision and insight.

Your collective kindness has touched many, many people.

With love,
Tobias

    Tobias, you rock!

I regret being out of town the night of the party, but I feel really really lucky to have finally met you before you left for home. I don't want to embarass you online, but I can't seem to shut up about how I feel about what you're doing.

For the peeps I invited to this tribe that are still in the dark about what it's about or who Tobias is... take some time at the end of your day and visit his website, read some of the stories he's written about his travels in Cambodia and the people he met along the way.

    humantranslation.org/index_f...pose.htm

I went there a few years ago, and brought back all sorts of cool souvenirs and pictures... crazy anecdotes, misadventures of the sort that appeal to the exotic longings most of us have when we think of travel in faraway, under-developed countries like Cambodia. What I found harder to share, verbally anyway, were the less exciting but infinitely more profound moments I shared with the people I met and how each of them opened up my heart bit by bit and started to change who i was, and who I wanted to be.

Unfortunately, but predictably, my return to a hectic American life of too much activity and not enough substance muted everything I'd experienced to a faint buzz. Looking through old photos conjures little more than a tenuous connection to the wide-eyed girl staring back at me.

Reading Tobias' writings, for me, have felt like someone waking me back up with a bucket of ice water.

There's accessiblity in his writing. I think he's got a beautiful gift for bridging the gap between something seemingly elusive (remote jungle villages! mysterious monks! moped accidents on the Burmese border! ;) ) and the human longings we all share to make a difference in the world. all in a very humble package, I might add...

So I'm thrilled and ecstatic that the weekend was a success, but strangely not surprised. There are some beautiful people here that I know don't party for partying's sake, but to connect. I think it was an awesome idea, to connect on a further level, and personally I'd like to see more of this kind of stuff in the future. for now, thanks for providing the opportunity and a forum where we can give of ourselves to someone who needs it.

    -s.k.

and Happy Birthday! I'll see you in a few days!
